The best definition that I could find to explain what sustainability is states that it is about the currently disruptive relationship between Earth’s two most complex systems, human culture and the living room.
Being sustainable or choosing to live sustainably is basically choosing a lifestyle that attempts to reduce an individual’s or society’s use of the Earth’s natural resources.
Here are some simple things that you can do in everyday life to be more sustainable.
Walk or bike when you can
Living on campus, this was an easy way for me to make a sustainable choice. I would always walk to class or around town to go see friends or run errands. I barely ever drove my car during my time at college. So next time you have to go somewhere, consider if you can walk or ride your bike there instead.
Try going paperless
Instead of receiving your bills and other mail the traditional way, try going paperless. This is a really easy way to use less paper. This can work with work related things as well, considering emailing and using documents instead of printing out paperwork.
Use reusable Tupperware
Instead of eating out or using plastic sandwich bags to transport your lunch, try using reusable Tupperware from home.
Use refillable household products
Every time you buy new cleaning supplies you are creating more plastic waste. An easy solution for this is buying refillable products or using household items to create your own cleaning solutions.
Bring your own kitchen utensils
I know that the average person hates doing dishes, but if you have a drawer full of kitchen utensils at home, what is the point of using plastics utensils? Just grab a fork, knife and spoon from your kitchen and forget about the plastic single use utensils.
